Incredible Antique Atlas!

Mitchell's Universal Atlas, published in 1854 by Cowperthwait, Desilver & Butler in Philadelphia

Did you know the population of Texas in 1850 was just over 212,000? Or that the approximate population of Europe was 265 million? Did you know that the tallest mountain in the world was Mount Dwahalagiri in Asia at 26,262 feet? The world has changed so much in just 150 years! And now you can own a piece of history!

INCLUDED ITEMS:

  • Each map is colored and shows a great detail of information. Some U.S. maps have statistics such as population, steam boat or railroad routes. A few other maps have historical or government information.
  • Some maps are missing (view document below for details) but the rest are in fairly good condition. There is some browning of the pages, and a few of the maps have letters missing from the titles.
  • Maps are printed on one side of the page only. On the back of about 6 maps are drawings that someone did (two are of a bird, the rest are of faces).
  • The outer binding is worn and the interior binding is in poor condition but might be able to be repaired by a professional. (The spine of the book has come loose from the papers.) Binding may be original so it is amazing this book has held up this well after 147 years!
  • Outer cover is worn but around the edges and there are a few scratches on the front and back covers.
  • There are numbers (handwritten in pencil) next to some of the maps, which may be appraised values, although we have not been able to verify this. Click here to see the list of maps. If you don't see a map listed, it isn't here so please don't ask us to search through this book. The less we handle it the better!
